Self-Care Strategies During the Holidays
Share
The holiday season can be overwhelming for anyone, some more than others. It can be particularly challenging for high-achieving women of color who often carry the emotional weight of multiple roles. Practicing self-care becomes crucial during this time, not only as a way to recharge but also as an act of resilience. Instead of overcommitting, try making self-care your top holiday priority, ensuring that you feel nourished instead of drained by season’s end. Be sure to pack plenty boundaries for this one. Remember boundaries are created to uphold your value system.
Self-care may look different for everyone, but a key part of it is understanding what rejuvenates you. Try taking intentional quiet moments in the morning, planning a solo day trip, going for a run, indoor swimming, taking a group exercise or yoga class. Tuning into your creative side is an excellent way to ease your stress as well. Maybe explore painting on canvas, visiting an art gallery, knitting a scarf, going to an opera, ballet or play. Listening to live bands or playing an instrument yourself does wonders for balancing your energy.
You could also try letting your inner child come out to play. Your inner child might enjoy ice skating or roller skating, arcades, laser tag, carnivals and amusement parks. Whatever it is that allows you to let your hair down and frolic, make time for it! No excuses!
Self-care is a priority and a necessity; you just have to learn to treat it as such. Incorporating daily self-care rituals—like sipping tea, reading a book, stretching or doing a five-minute breathing exercise—can help bring a sense of peace amidst the holiday chaos.
For women of color, self-care also includes finding spaces where your experiences are understood and valued and it’s safe to unmask. Connecting with others who share your experiences can alleviate feelings of isolation that may arise during the holidays. Online communities, local gatherings, or even a supportive friend group can be a source of grounding and affirmation during this busy season. You know women love to brunch! Invite one or a few of your girlfriends over for a potluck brunch. Now everybody is saving money and having a great time! Be creative and practical. Do what works for your circumstances and pockets. There’s no need to create additional stress when the objective is to relieve stress.
Remember, self-care isn’t selfish; it’s essential. Prioritizing it throughout the holidays means you can better handle the season’s demands while preserving your mental and emotional well-being. Allow this holiday season to be one where you gift yourself the time and space to rest, recharge, and reflect on your needs as you step into the new year.
